The Effects of Friend Support on the Positive Emotion and Life Satisfaction among Undergraduate Students

Abstract
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between friend support, positive emotion and satisfaction with life among undergraduate students through structure equation modeling.

Methods: The hypothetical model was tested using survey method among 205 undergraduate students during the 2015 academic year. We used Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support, Concise Measure of Subjective Well-Being, and Satisfaction with Life scale. Data were analyzed using the SPSS and AMOS programs.

Results: The model fitness statistics of the hypothetical model fitted to the recommended levels: ¥ö2 (p)=76.38 (.001), GFI=.94, AGFI=.90, RMSEA=.07, NFI=.94, CFI=.97. Friend support had an influence on positive emotion directly (¥â=.48, p=.002) and satisfaction with life indirectly (¥â=.27, p=.001). Positive emotion mediated the relationship between friend support and satisfaction with life. Friend support and positive emotion explained 33.2% of the variance in life satisfaction.

Conclusion: These results show mechanisms underlying connections between friend support and subjective well-being
by demonstrating the impact of emotion. This suggests that friend-support programs can be used as an effective intervention to improve mental health among undergraduate students.
